Three days is enough to see the best of northern Gifu without rushing: a hot spring night, Takayama's old town and Shirakawa-go's thatched farmhouses. All three sit along one route from Nagoya, so this plan never doubles back. Times and prices come from JR Central, Visit Gifu, Nohi Bus and the local tourism sites.

Day 1: Why start in Gero Onsen?
Gero is the first stop on the way north, so a night there costs no extra travel. The Limited Express Hida runs direct from Nagoya in about 1 hour 30–40 minutes (Visit Gifu). JR Central lists the ticketless reserved-seat charge for Nagoya to Gero as ¥2,390 in the normal season, plus the base fare (JR Central).
- Before check-in: Shirasagi-no-yu public bath, about a 7-minute walk from the station, costs ¥470 for adults (Gero Onsen Tourism Association, as of October 2026).
- Foot baths: the Gifu Prefecture tourism site counts nine around town (Gifu Prefecture tourism).
- Gero Onsen Gassho Village: an open-air museum of thatched farmhouses, about a 20-minute walk from the station, 8:30–17:00, ¥800 for adults (Gero Onsen Tourism Association).
The water is an alkaline simple spring with a pH of 9.2 (Gero Onsen Tourism Association). More in our Gero Onsen guide and Nagoya to Gero Onsen.
Day 2: What should you see in Takayama?
The train from Gero to Takayama takes about 45–60 minutes (JR Central). Leave your bags at your hotel near the station and walk into town:
| Sight | Getting there | Hours | Adult price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sanmachi old town | About 12 min on foot from JR Takayama Station | Streets always open | Free |
| Takayama Jinya | About 10 min on foot from the station | 8:45–17:00 (to 16:30 Nov–Mar) | ¥500 |
| Hida Folk Village | About 10 min by bus | 8:30–17:00 | ¥700 |

For dinner, see our Hida beef guide. Stay near the station: the Nohi Bus Center for tomorrow's Shirakawa-go bus is right next to it (where to stay in Takayama). Since October 1, 2025, Takayama City charges an accommodation tax of ¥100–¥300 per person per night depending on the room charge (Takayama City).
Day 3: How do you fit in the morning market and Shirakawa-go?
- Morning market: the Miyagawa and Jinya-mae markets open 7:00–12:00 from April to November and 8:00–12:00 from December to March (Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026). Go early, around 7:00–8:00 in season.
- Shirakawa-go: buses from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center take about 50 minutes and cost ¥2,800 one way; most departures need a reserved seat, booked on Japan Bus Online (Nohi Bus). The Tourist Association suggests 2–3 hours in the village (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ).
Two ways to end the trip:
| Option | Plan |
|---|---|
| Back to Nagoya | Bus to Shirakawa-go and back to Takayama (last bus back 17:30), then the Hida to Nagoya, about 2 h 20 min |
| On to Kanazawa | Bus Takayama → Shirakawa-go, then a later bus to Kanazawa; use the coin lockers at the bus terminal (¥500 or ¥1,000, 8:00–17:00) |

Bus times for both options: Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Takayama to Kanazawa by bus. Going on to Kanazawa and Kyoto or Osaka? The Takayama-Hokuriku pass (¥19,800 for 5 days) covers the Hida, the Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa bus and the Hokuriku Shinkansen.
Can you swap Gero for Okuhida?
Yes, if you want mountain views from the bath. Okuhida is about 58 minutes by Nohi Bus from Takayama to Hirayu Onsen (¥1,600), so it works best as a night between day 2 and day 3 with the Shinhotaka Ropeway (Nohi Bus). Compare the two in Gero vs Okuhida and where to stay for a ryokan night.
What changes in winter?
Shirakawa-go is under snow from late December to late February, and Nohi Bus warns of delays of two hours or more on the Shirakawa-go line in winter (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ; Nohi Bus). Leave a buffer before any train or flight on day 3. See Shirakawa-go in winter and Takayama in winter.
Before you go: you'll rely on your phone for bus reservations, timetables and maps on this trip. Our Japan eSIM guide explains how much data to get; Yesim's Japan plans start at $4.44 for 1 GB, valid 30 days from first connection (as of October 2026).

From Nagoya, go Gero → Takayama → Shirakawa-go: Gero is on the Hida line on the way north, about 1 h 30–40 min from Nagoya, and Shirakawa-go is about 50 minutes by bus from Takayama (Visit Gifu; Nohi Bus).
