Before you go: what to book
- Your Takayama hotel. Book early for festival dates: the Spring Takayama Festival is on April 14–15 and the Autumn Festival on October 9–10 (Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026). See where to stay in Takayama.
- Your bus seats. The Nohi Bus between Nagoya and Takayama needs a reservation on every bus, with booking opening one month ahead (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026).
- Mobile data. Bus times and maps are easier with a Japan eSIM set up before you fly.
Day 1: Nagoya to Takayama and the old town
Morning: get to Takayama
- Train: the Limited Express Hida runs from JR Nagoya Station to JR Takayama Station in approximately 2 hours 20 minutes (JR Central, as of October 2026).
- Bus: the Nohi Bus highway bus takes 2 hours 40 minutes and costs ¥3,600 one way, or ¥3,300 with the web discount (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026).
Leave early so you arrive by late morning. Drop your bags at your hotel near the station; the main sights are 10 to 12 minutes away on foot. Full details are in our Nagoya to Takayama guide.
Lunch: Hida beef
Takayama is known for Hida beef, eaten as street food such as nigiri and skewers, or at sit-down meals. See Hida beef in Takayama for what the name means and how to order it.
Afternoon: Sanmachi and Takayama Jinya
- Sanmachi is the old merchant district, with lattice-fronted wooden townhouses, sake breweries and small shops, a 12-minute walk from JR Takayama Station (Hida Takayama Tourism).
- Takayama Jinya, the former Edo-period government office, is open 8:45–17:00 from April to October and 8:45–16:30 from November to March, with the ticket window closing 30 minutes earlier. Admission is ¥500 (Takayama Jinya, as of October 2026).
Late afternoon: Hida Folk Village
Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum of old Hida farmhouses, including thatched gassho-style houses. It is open 8:30–17:00 and costs ¥700 for adults. The Sarubobo Bus from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center to Hida-no-Sato-Shita takes about 10 minutes and costs ¥210 one way (Hida Folk Village; Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026).
If you are visiting Shirakawa-go on day 2, you can skip the Folk Village and spend the time in Sanmachi instead, since both show gassho-style houses.
Night: stay in Takayama
Staying near JR Takayama Station is the easiest choice for this plan, because the Nohi Bus Center, where buses to Shirakawa-go leave, is right by the station (Hida Takayama Tourism).

Day 2: morning markets and Shirakawa-go
Early morning: the morning markets
Takayama has two morning markets, both open every day:
- Miyagawa Morning Market, along the Miyagawa River: 7:00–12:00 from April to November, 8:00–12:00 from December to March (Hida Takayama Tourism).
- Jinya-mae Morning Market, in front of Takayama Jinya: same hours (Hida Takayama Tourism).
Go first thing, before you check out.
Late morning: bus to Shirakawa-go
The express bus from Takayama to Shirakawago Bus Terminal takes about 50 minutes, and the village is a 1-minute walk from the terminal (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). Check the current Nohi Bus timetable and reserve your seats.
Afternoon: 2–3 hours in Shirakawa-go
The Tourist Association estimates that walking around the village takes about 2–3 hours (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ). Priorities:
- Shiroyama viewpoint for the view over the whole village. The shuttle from in front of Wada House runs 10:00–14:40 every 20 minutes, with a break from 12:00 to 13:00, and costs ¥200 one way, cash only (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ, as of October 2026). Go up early in your visit.
- Wada House, the largest remaining gassho-zukuri house in the village according to Visit Gifu. Admission is ¥400 for adults, cash only, 9:00–17:00 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).
More detail is in our Shirakawa-go guide.
Evening: back to Nagoya
The highway bus between Shirakawa-go and the Meitetsu Bus Center in Nagoya takes about 2 hours 30 minutes, with reserved seats only and adult fares of ¥3,600–¥4,700 depending on the date (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association; Gifu Bus, as of October 2026). Book this seat when you plan the trip; on a two-day trip, it sets how long you can stay in the village.
Variations
- Winter light-up: in January 2027, Shirakawa-go holds its light-up on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, and the 2026 event was reservation-only. See our light-up guide before building it into this plan.
- Add an onsen night: continue to Gero Onsen instead of returning to Nagoya directly. JR Central lists the train from Takayama to Gero at about 45–60 minutes (JR Central). See our Gero Onsen guide.
- Only one day? A guided tour from Nagoya can cover both towns in a day, with less time in each. Compare the options in Takayama or Shirakawa-go?
FAQ
Is 2 days in Takayama enough?
Two days covers Takayama's main sights, the morning markets and a visit to Shirakawa-go. Stay longer if you want to add Hida Folk Village and Shirakawa-go at a slower pace, or an onsen night in Gero or Okuhida.
Should I stay in Takayama or Shirakawa-go?
Takayama is the easier base: it has trains to Nagoya, the Nohi Bus Center by the station, and more places to stay. Shirakawa-go is about 50 minutes away by express bus (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).
What time do the Takayama morning markets close?
Both the Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets close at noon. They open at 7:00 from April to November and 8:00 from December to March (Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026).
Do I need to book buses for this itinerary?
Yes. The Nagoya–Takayama Nohi Bus and the Shirakawa-go–Nagoya highway bus both use reserved seats, with booking opening one month ahead (Nohi Bus; Gifu Bus).
Prices, hours and bus schedules change. Check official sources before you go. Facts last checked: 2026-10-19.
