A trip to Takayama and Shirakawa-go runs on buses that need reservations, timetables that change by season, and walks through villages where you'll want a map. Having mobile data from the moment you land makes all of that easier. This guide explains how much data to get and how a Japan eSIM works, using the plan details published by Yesim.

Why do you need mobile data in Takayama and Shirakawa-go?
- Bus reservations. Most Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses need a reserved seat, booked online through Japan Bus Online (Nohi Bus). Being able to check or change a booking on the go helps, especially in winter, when Nohi Bus warns of delays of two hours or more.
- Timetables and last buses. The last bus from Shirakawa-go to Takayama leaves at 17:30, and the Kamikochi bus runs only in season (see Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Kamikochi from Takayama).
- Online train tickets. Ticketless Limited Express Hida tickets and advance discounts are booked through JR West's E5489 online service (JR Central).
- Maps in the old towns and villages. Sanmachi, Shirakawa-go and Gero are all explored on foot.
How much data do you need?
Yesim's FAQ gives a rough guide of about 1 hour of 1080p video streaming per 1 GB (Yesim Japan). Maps, messaging and booking sites use far less than video. As a rule of thumb:
| Trip and use | Suggested plan |
|---|---|
| A few days, maps and messages only | 1–5 GB |
| One week, maps, bookings, photos to social media | 5–10 GB |
| Two weeks, or sharing a hotspot with a travel partner | 20–30 GB |
Our suggestion based on Yesim's usage guide; your use may differ.
If you share your data with a partner's phone through the hotspot, the shared data counts against your plan (Yesim).
How does a Japan eSIM work?
- Check your phone. eSIM works only on compatible Apple and Android devices. Yesim suggests dialling *#06# to check for eSIM support, or checking its compatible device list (Yesim Japan). Your phone also needs to be unlocked for other carriers.
- Buy before you fly. You have 90 days from purchase to activate (same source).
- Install by QR code or in the app. Each QR code works on one device only (Yesim).
- Switch it on in Japan. The validity period starts when the eSIM connects to a network, so the 30 days don't start until you arrive (same source).
Your usual number stays in your phone for messaging apps, and you avoid your home carrier's roaming charges by turning off data roaming on your home line. Check your home carrier's own rules before you travel.
eSIM, pocket WiFi or roaming?
| eSIM | Pocket WiFi | Home carrier roaming | |

| Something extra to carry and charge | No | Yes | No |
| Works for several people | Through your phone's hotspot | Yes | No |
| Phone requirement | eSIM-compatible, unlocked | Any Wi-Fi device | Your plan must include Japan |
General comparison; check the specific product's terms.
For one or two people with eSIM-compatible phones, an eSIM is usually the simplest option: nothing to collect at the airport, and nothing to return.
