How Many Days in Takayama? 1, 2 or 3 Days Compared

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-23

Quick answer: Two days is the best fit for most first visits to Takayama: one day for Sanmachi old town, Takayama Jinya and Hida Folk Village, and a second for a morning market and Shirakawa-go, about 50 minutes away by bus. One day works as a long trip from Nagoya (about 2 hours 20 minutes each way by train) if you skip Shirakawa-go, and a third day lets you add Okuhida's hot springs and the Shinhotaka Ropeway, Kamikochi (mid-April to mid-November) or Gero Onsen.

Takayama is a small town, but it is also the base for Shirakawa-go, the Okuhida hot springs, Kamikochi and Gero Onsen. How many days you need depends on how many of those you want to add. This guide compares one, two and three days, using travel times and opening hours from the operators and official tourism sites.

What can you see in one day?

From Nagoya, the Limited Express Hida reaches Takayama in about 2 hours 20 minutes (JR Central, as of October 2026), so a day trip gives you a long afternoon. The main sights are close together:

Sight Getting there Hours Adult price
Sanmachi old town About 12 min on foot from JR Takayama Station Streets always open Free
Takayama Jinya About 10 min on foot from the station 8:45–17:00 (to 16:30 Nov–Mar) ¥500
Hida Folk Village About 10 min by bus 8:30–17:00 ¥700

The morning markets close at noon, so a day trip from Nagoya usually misses them. See Nagoya to Takayama for trains, buses and advance discounts.

Why are two days the sweet spot?

One night lets you see the town on day 1 and add a morning market and Shirakawa-go on day 2:

Our Takayama 2-day itinerary has an hour-by-hour plan, and Takayama to Shirakawa-go lists every bus.

What can you add with a third day?

Day trip from Takayama Travel time Notes
Okuhida and the Shinhotaka Ropeway About 1 h 35–45 min by Nohi Bus (¥2,200) Ropeway to 2,156 m; ¥3,800 round trip; open year-round, weather permitting
Kamikochi About 90 min by Nohi Bus via Hirayu (¥3,000; ¥5,800 round trip) Bus runs only April 17–November 15 (2026 season)

A third day also makes Takayama easier in winter, when buses can be delayed by snow. Guides: Shinhotaka Ropeway, Kamikochi from Takayama, Gero Onsen and Gero vs Okuhida.

Where should you stay?

For a two- or three-day stay, the area around JR Takayama Station is the practical choice: the Nohi Bus Center, where buses leave for Shirakawa-go, Okuhida and Kamikochi, is right next to the station. Our where to stay in Takayama guide compares the station area with the old town.

FAQ

Is one day enough for Takayama?

One day covers Sanmachi, Takayama Jinya and Hida Folk Village or a sake brewery, but not the morning markets (they close at noon) or Shirakawa-go. With about 2 hours 20 minutes each way from Nagoya by train, it is a long day (JR Central).

Is two days in Takayama enough?

For most first visits, yes: one day in town and one for a morning market and Shirakawa-go, which is about 50 minutes away by bus (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026).

What can I do with three days in Takayama?

Add a day trip to Okuhida and the Shinhotaka Ropeway, to Kamikochi between mid-April and mid-November, or to Gero Onsen, about 45–60 minutes away by train (sources above).

Can I visit Shirakawa-go and Takayama in one day?

Yes, but it is rushed. A guided tour from Nagoya is the simplest way; on your own, you need an early train or bus and reserved seats on the Shirakawa-go buses.
