Gifu in Winter 2026–27: Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Okuhida Onsen and Getting Around Safely

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-19

Quick answer: The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up is listed for January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027, and the previous edition was a fully advance-reservation event with no same-day visits. Takayama is a winter base about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya Station on the Limited Express Hida, with buses to Shirakawa-go and Okuhida, where the Shinhotaka Ropeway round trip costs 3,800 yen for adults. Snow tires are required to drive to the Shinhotaka Ropeway, Takayama asks visitors not to drive rental cars on normal tires in winter, and Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses can run two hours or more late, so build spare time into each day.

Winter changes northern Gifu. From December to March, the Hida region is cold and snowy. Thatched farmhouses and old merchant streets sit under snow, and open-air hot spring baths look out on white mountains. It is also the season when the roads need the most care. This guide covers the main winter draws for first-time visitors: the Shirakawa-go light-up, Takayama's winter evenings, the Okuhida onsen villages with the Shinhotaka Ropeway, and Gero Onsen's winter fireworks. It ends with practical advice on getting around in snow.

All dates, prices and hours below come from official pages and are marked "as of October 2026". Many winter events announce their dates late in the year, so check the linked page before you book.

Shirakawa-go winter light-up 2027

The Shirakawa-go light-up is the village's best-known winter event. For a few evenings each January, the gassho-zukuri farmhouses are lit up after dark. The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association lists the 41st Light-Up on four days: January 11 (a public holiday), January 17, January 24 and January 31, 2027 (as of October 2026, Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).

Visiting during the light-up takes planning:

Start times, viewing-spot rules and any fees for 2027 were not set out on the pages checked. Look for them on the association's site, or call the association on +81-5769-6-1013 (9:00–17:00, as of October 2026).

The easiest way to see the light-up without a car is often a reserved light-up bus tour or a package that includes entry. Shirakawa-go is also lovely on ordinary winter days. Our Shirakawa-go from Nagoya guide covers the regular bus routes.

Booking option: Takayama & Shirakawa-go day trip from Nagoya (Klook). This is a general day tour, not a light-up tour. Check the itinerary, dates and inclusions before booking.

Takayama in winter

Takayama's old town stays open all winter. Its winter evenings also have their own events. Hida Takayama's official tourism site listed these for the 2025–26 season (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama event calendar, January):

The site's February calendar also lists Setsubun in early February. On this day, a costumed bean-throwing procession passes Takayama Station, Honmachi Street and Kokubunji Temple.

The 2026–27 dates had not been published when this guide was checked. The calendar is updated each year, so check the Hida Takayama event calendar before you go.

Takayama is a good winter base. The limited express trains from Nagoya and the buses to Shirakawa-go and Okuhida all start there. JR Central gives the trip as about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya Station on the Limited Express Hida (as of October 2026, JR Central). For step-by-step routes, see Takayama from Nagoya. Warm food matters on cold days, and our Hida beef in Takayama guide covers where to start.

Booking option: 5-Day JR Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass (Klook). Check which trains and buses the pass covers, its price and who can buy it before you book.

Okuhida Onsen and the Shinhotaka Ropeway in winter

Okuhida Onsengo is a group of five hot spring areas in the mountains east of Takayama: Hirayu, Fukuchi, Shin-Hirayu, Tochio and Shinhotaka (Okuhida Onsengo Tourism Association). The tourism association describes winter as the season to warm up in a snow-viewing bath (Okuhida Onsengo). It also notes that the Shinhotaka no Yu day-use bath is closed in winter (as of October 2026, Okuhida Onsengo).

Winter night events in the area listed on Hida Takayama's calendar include:

Shinhotaka Ropeway runs year-round. Departures run at :00 and :30 past the hour on No. 1 Ropeway and at :15 and :45 on No. 2 Ropeway. The adult round-trip fare between Shinhotaka Onsen and Nishi-Hotaka-guchi is 3,800 yen (as of October 2026, Shinhotaka Ropeway). Things to know for winter, all from the ropeway's FAQ (as of October 2026):

No 2026–27 maintenance dates had been posted on the ropeway's news page when this guide was checked. Check the operating status on the official site on the morning you go.

Gero Onsen winter fireworks (Hanabi Monogatari)

Gero Onsen is on the JR Takayama Line between Nagoya and Takayama, so it fits easily into a winter route. Its winter fireworks, Fuyu no Gero Onsen Hanabi Monogatari, ran every Saturday from January 10 to March 28, 2026. The 12 shows started at 8:30 p.m. and lasted about 10 minutes. They were launched from the Hida River bank downstream of Gero Ohashi bridge. Admission was free, and shows could be canceled in bad weather or high water (2026 edition, as of October 2026, Gifu Prefecture Tourism Federation).

The 2027 schedule had not been published when this guide was checked. Dates are announced each year, so watch the Gero Onsen Tourism Association and Gifu's tourism site. For baths, ryokan and the walk through town, see our Gero Onsen guide.

Getting around in snow: bus or drive?

Driving. Hida Takayama's official site asks visitors not to drive rental cars with normal tires to Takayama in winter, and to take care on snow-covered roads (Hida Takayama). The Shinhotaka Ropeway also says winter equipment such as snow tires is required (FAQ). If you drive, confirm snow tires when you book the rental. Check closures on Gifu Prefecture's road information site, which the Okuhida association links to. The Okuhida association also posted a notice about partial restrictions and a detour on Route 158 between Takayama and Hirayu Onsen (July 2026, Okuhida Onsengo).

Buses and trains. Public transport lets you skip snow driving, but expect delays. Nohi Bus warns that Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses can run two hours or more late because of parking-lot queues near Shirakawa-go, heavy snow or expressway closures. Some services do not run from December 29 to January 3. Some services need a reservation, and they can be booked through Japan Bus Online or by phone on (0577) 32-1688 (as of October 2026, Nohi Bus). The one-way fare from Takayama to Shirakawa-go is listed as 2,800 yen. However, Nohi Bus has announced a fare revision on this route from December 1, 2026, so check the current fare (Nohi Bus news). Check live bus status on Nohi Bus service information, and check JR Central's train service information on the day of travel.

Tips for a smooth trip:

What to pack

Plan for below-freezing temperatures and snow underfoot. Useful items include:

Higher spots such as the ropeway's upper station are colder than the valleys. Bring a small towel for onsen visits, and leave room in your schedule for weather changes.
