Shirakawa-go in Winter: Snow, Getting There, What to Wear and the Light-Up

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-22

Quick answer: Shirakawa-go is usually under snow from late December to late February, with February snow reaching 170 cm or more, so it is the best time for the classic snowy view, but you should go by bus or tour rather than drive (studless tyres are required), allow for bus delays of two hours or more, and wear warm, waterproof boots with deep treads. The 2027 light-up evenings are January 11, 17, 24 and 31, and on other nights day visitors cannot stay in the village after dark.

When does Shirakawa-go get snow?

The Tourist Association says that in recent years the first snow falls around early December, and that snow keeps building from late December to late February (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ, as of October 2026). February snow can reach 170 cm or more, and the record is 4.5 m (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association). Shirakawa Village's own FAQ says snow falls every year from December to March (Shirakawa Village).

For the deepest snow, aim for late January to February. Early December can be too early for a full snow cover, and by March the snow is melting.

How do you get to Shirakawa-go in winter?

From How Time Adult fare (one way)
Takayama Nohi Bus About 50 min ¥2,800
Kanazawa Express bus About 1 h 20 min ¥2,800
Nagoya (Meitetsu Bus Center) Highway bus About 2 h 30 min (2 h 50 min from Nagoya Station) ¥3,600–¥4,700 by date

Sources: Nohi Bus; Shirakawa-go Tourist Association; Gifu Bus, as of October 2026.

All three need reserved seats on most services. In winter, Nohi Bus warns that delays of two hours or more can happen because of traffic waiting to park at Shirakawa-go, heavy snow or expressway closures (Nohi Bus). Gifu Bus says it does not refund fares or cover missed connections caused by delays (Gifu Bus). Don't book a tight train or flight on the same day.

Can you drive to Shirakawa-go in winter?

You can, but Shirakawa Village says studless winter tyres are required, and recommends carrying tyre chains and using a 4WD vehicle (Shirakawa Village FAQ). The Tourist Association also asks drivers to use studless tyres because the road surface is very slippery, and highly recommends 4WD (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ).

The village car park at Seseragi Park charges ¥2,000 for a standard car, 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). On light-up days every vehicle needs a parking reservation (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). From December 1, 2026, the village is also introducing advance reservations for tour buses at its Seseragi Park Oro parking lot (Shirakawa Village).

If you are not used to snow driving, a bus or a guided tour is the simpler choice.

What should you wear?

Shirakawa Village advises warm clothing, gloves and winter footwear, and says temperatures can stay below freezing even in the daytime. It warns that slips are common even when it is not snowing, and suggests rainwear or a poncho rather than an umbrella when snow is falling (Shirakawa Village FAQ). Its winter page recommends long boots or footwear with deep treads because icy roads are slippery (Shirakawa Village).

What changes in winter?

When is the Shirakawa-go light-up?

The 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up is on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). The 2026 event was reservation-only, and lodging handled by the Tourist Association is allocated by lottery. Our light-up guide explains how to attend.

Should you stay overnight?

Staying in a farmhouse inn is the only way to see the village at night outside the light-up dates, and it avoids racing the last bus in snow. The Tourist Association's accommodation search lists 41 places to stay (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). Most travellers base themselves in Takayama instead, about 50 minutes away by bus; see where to stay in Takayama and Takayama in winter.
