Key points from the same release:
- Booking: ticketless tickets are sold through E5489, JR West's online booking service, from 10:00 one month before travel. The ticketless reserved-seat price is the same as at the station counter.
- Hayatoku discounts are not sold for April 27–May 6, August 10–19 or December 28–January 6, and seats per train are limited.
- Base fare: ticketless tickets cover only the limited express charge. Since October 1, 2025, you can use a TOICA IC card at Gero Station for the base fare when riding the Hida.
If you have a Japan Rail Pass or a regional pass, check whether it covers the Hida before buying separate tickets. Klook sells the JR Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass, which is worth comparing if you are continuing to Takayama.
Is there a direct bus from Nagoya to Gero?
Nohi Bus's highway bus from Nagoya goes to Takayama via Gujo-Hachiman, not via Gero (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026). The train is the straightforward option.
What can you do on a day trip?
The tourism association's model course (same source) arrives at 14:22, picks up leaflets at the tourist information center at 14:30, takes a bus from the station at 14:40 to Gero Onsen Gassho Village at 14:45, and walks the hot spring town from 16:15. To try ryokan baths instead, the Yumeguri Tegata pass costs ¥2,500 for three day-use baths at member inns, valid for six months (Gero Onsen Tourism Association). Our Gero Onsen guide has hours, closing days and bath etiquette.
Should you stay the night?
A day trip works if you mainly want to try the water. Staying lets you bathe in the evening and the next morning, and makes it easy to continue to Takayama: JR Central gives the train from Takayama to Gero as about 45–60 minutes (JR Central), so the trip in the other direction is similar. See Nagoya to Takayama, our Takayama 2-day itinerary, and Gero Onsen vs Okuhida Onsen if you are choosing between hot spring areas.
