Takayama is a compact town. The old town, the two morning markets and the station all sit within a short walk of each other, so the choice is less about distance and more about what you want to wake up to: a rail platform, a lattice-fronted street, or a mountain hot spring.
Here is the quick answer:
- First visit, one or two nights, arriving by train or bus: stay near JR Takayama Station.
- You want evenings and early mornings in the old streets: stay between the station and Sanmachi, or near the Miyagawa River.
- You want a hot-spring ryokan in the mountains: add a night in Okuhida Onsengo after Takayama.
Getting here first? See our guide to getting from Nagoya to Takayama. The Limited Express Hida takes about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya (as of October 2026, JR Central).
Takayama Station area: easiest for trains, buses and day trips
Who this area suits: first-time visitors, travelers with large luggage, anyone doing day trips to Shirakawa-go or Okuhida, and people arriving late or leaving early.
The station area is the transport hub. Once you exit JR Takayama Station, the Nohi Bus Center is behind the police box, and loop buses within the city plus express buses to Shirakawa-go and Tokyo leave from there (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism). That makes the station area practical if you plan to take a day trip to Shirakawa-go or ride the bus up to the Northern Alps.
The old town is still close. The Sanmachi preservation area is a 12-minute walk from JR Takayama Station (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
Example property: Hida Takayama Washington Hotel Plaza describes itself as a few minutes' walk from the east exit of JR Takayama Station and has a large shared bath; its own site does not describe the bath as a hot spring (as of October 2026, official site, Japanese). The same page offers a dinner plan at a partner restaurant, rather than an in-house restaurant, so check the plan details when you book.
Trade-off: you are staying by a working rail and bus hub, not in the historic streets. If evening walks through the old town matter most, look closer to Sanmachi.
Sanmachi old town: for atmosphere in the early morning and evening
Who this area suits: couples, photographers, and travelers who want to step outside into the historic streets before the day-trip crowds arrive.
The Sanmachi Traditional Buildings Preservation Area covers parts of Kamiichinomachi, Kamininomachi, Kamisannomachi, Kataharamachi and Shinmeimachi 4-chome (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism). The tourism board describes continuous wooden latticework, water channels beneath the eaves, many sake breweries marked by cedar-leaf balls, and eateries and souvenir shops in the area.
Staying in or next to Sanmachi means the old town is outside your door, and Hida beef dinners are a short walk away (see our Hida beef guide). It is still a 12-minute walk back to the station (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism), so plan for that walk with luggage, or check whether your property is near a bus stop. The tourism board notes that a taxi is sometimes the only option if your accommodation is far from a bus stop (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
Trade-off: the old town is busiest during the day, and you will walk to the station for every train or long-distance bus.
Near the Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets: for early risers
Who this area suits: travelers who want to browse the morning markets before breakfast, and families who want to be between the station and the sights.
Takayama has two morning markets, and both run all year:
- Miyagawa Morning Market runs along the Miyagawa River between the Kaji-bashi and Yayoi-bashi bridges. It opens 7 a.m. to noon from April to November and 8 a.m. to noon from December to March, and it is a 15-minute walk from JR Takayama Station (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
- Jinya-mae Morning Market is held in front of Takayama Jinya, keeps the same seasonal hours, and is a 10-minute walk from JR Takayama Station (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
The river side of town sits between the station and the old town, so it is a sensible middle ground. You can be at a market stall at opening time and still reach the station on foot.
Trade-off: properties here vary widely, from small inns to larger hotels. Check the exact address on a map against the market and the station before you book.
Okuhida Onsengo: a side trip for a mountain hot-spring night
Who this area suits: travelers who want an outdoor hot-spring bath with mountain views, hikers heading to the Northern Alps, and anyone adding a slower night after Takayama.
Okuhida Onsengo is in the mountains east of town, and Hirayu Onsen is its gateway (as of October 2026, Okuhida Onsengo Tourism Association). Nohi Bus runs the Hirayu–Shinhotaka line from the Takayama bus terminal. Adult fares from Takayama are ¥1,600 to Hirayu Onsen and ¥2,200 to the Shinhotaka Ropeway (as of October 2026, Nohi Bus). The tourism board lists the bus ride from JR Takayama Station to the Shinhotaka Ropeway as 1 hour 45 minutes, and from the Hirayu area back to the station as about 1 hour (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism). Nohi Bus warns that buses may be significantly delayed, especially in heavy snow (as of October 2026, Nohi Bus), so read our Gifu winter guide before a winter stay.
Example property: Okada Ryokan Warakutei is in Hirayu Onsen. Its official site says the inn has 10 guest rooms, each with its own open-air bath, and draws on its own hot-spring sources (as of October 2026, official site).
Trade-off: Okuhida is a separate trip, not a base for exploring Takayama town. Most first-time visitors sleep in Takayama, then move to Okuhida for one night. If you would rather stay at a hot-spring town on the train line, compare it with Gero Onsen. The Hida Takayama–Gero Onsen 2-day free bus ticket is one way to combine the two.
Ryokan vs hotel in Takayama
Choose a ryokan if you want a Japanese-style room, a communal or private bath, and a plan that may include dinner and breakfast at the inn. Read the plan carefully, as meals and their times differ from plan to plan.
Choose a hotel if you want a Western-style bed, flexible check-in, and the freedom to eat out in town each night. Station-area hotels make early trains and buses easy.
A common split for a first trip is a hotel or small inn in Takayama town, followed by one ryokan night with a hot-spring bath in Okuhida or Gero.
Local tax: Takayama has charged an accommodation tax since October 1, 2025. It is ¥100 per person per night for stays under ¥10,000, ¥200 for ¥10,000 to under ¥30,000, and ¥300 for ¥30,000 or more, based on the room charge excluding meals and consumption tax. Young children are exempt (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
When to book early: the April and October festivals
The Takayama Festival happens twice a year:
- Spring Takayama Festival (Sannō Matsuri): April 14 and 15, for Hie Jinja Shrine (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
- Autumn Takayama Festival (Hachiman Matsuri): October 9 and 10, for Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
The two festivals are held in different parts of town. The autumn parade takes place in the Shimomachi area, on the north side of Yasugawa Street (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism). The tourism board warns of heavy crowds during the festival and says it may limit entry from surrounding areas for safety (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
If your dates overlap a festival:
- Book your room as soon as your dates are fixed, and choose a rate with free cancellation where you can.
- Book train seats early as well.
- If Takayama town is full, consider staying in Okuhida or Gero and coming in by bus or train for the day.

FAQ
Is it better to stay near Takayama Station or in the old town?
Stay near the station if you have day trips, heavy luggage or early departures. Stay near Sanmachi if you want quiet mornings and evenings in the historic streets. The two are a 12-minute walk apart (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).
How many nights should I stay in Takayama?
One night lets you see the old town and a morning market. Two nights leave time for a day trip to Shirakawa-go or Okuhida. Add a separate night if you want a hot-spring ryokan in Okuhida or Gero.
Do I need to book far ahead for the Takayama Festival?
Book as early as you can. The festivals run on April 14–15 and October 9–10 (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism), and the tourism board expects heavy crowds.
Can I stay in Okuhida and visit Takayama on the same trip?
Yes. Nohi Bus links Takayama with Hirayu Onsen, and the tourism board's sample itinerary allows about an hour for the bus ride back to Takayama (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism). In winter, allow extra time for snow delays.
