Gifu City in One Day: Ropeway, Old Town and a Slow Breakfast

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-18

Quick answer: Gifu City is about 20 minutes from Nagoya by JR rapid train, and one day is enough for a morning service breakfast, the Mt. Kinka Ropeway and the Kawaramachi old town. From JR Gifu Station, a Gifu Bus to the Gifu Park stop takes about 15 minutes, and the 4-minute ropeway costs ¥1,300 round trip for adults (as of October 2026). The Gifu Castle keep has been closed for renovation since May 19, 2026, with reopening planned for November 2027.

Gifu City is about 20 minutes from Nagoya by JR rapid train, yet most visitors pass straight through on the way to Takayama or Shirakawa-go. That's a shame: in one unhurried day you can ride up the mountain where Oda Nobunaga based his castle, wander a riverside merchant district, and eat breakfast the way locals do.

Morning: breakfast with your coffee

Start at a neighborhood coffee shop for morning service: order a drink before late morning and toast or eggs come with it at no extra charge. Gifu City households spend more on coffee shops than any other prefectural capital or major city in Japan (Gifu City). Read our full guide: Gifu's Morning Service.

Late morning: Mt. Kinka Ropeway

Getting there: From the bus terminal at JR Gifu Station, take a Gifu Bus toward Nagarabashi (or the City Loop, counter-clockwise) for about 15 minutes and get off at the Gifu Park stop. The ropeway base station is about a 3-minute walk (Gifu Convention & Visitors Bureau, Gifu Castle).

The ropeway: The ride takes about 4 minutes. An adult round trip costs ¥1,300 (one way ¥800). It normally runs 9:00 to 18:00, with later evening service on some dates; on Fridays, weekends and holidays from October 1 to November 30 it runs until 20:30. It closes for maintenance on set dates, including December 1 to 28, 2026 and January 7 to February 16, 2027 (source, Gifu CVB, as of October 2026).

The castle (closed for renovation): Saito Dosan held this mountain during the Warring States period, and Oda Nobunaga later made it his base. The castle keep, a 1956 reconstruction, has been closed for renovation since May 19, 2026, with work planned to run until late October 2027 and reopening planned for November 2027. The castle museum is also closed, and the summit area in front of the keep is closed to through traffic (Gifu Convention & Visitors Bureau, as of October 2026). Check that page for the latest before you plan your visit around the castle.

Tip: if you visit on an autumn weekend evening, the later ropeway hours mean you can catch the city lights from the summit.

Afternoon: Kawaramachi old town

Walk or take the bus to the Nagarabashi stop for Kawaramachi, a former river port where merchants traded in Nobunaga's era. Latticed townhouses and black-walled storehouses line the streets, and many now hold cafés, restaurants and craft shops. It's a good place to pick up local souvenirs such as Gifu paper fans (Gifu Convention & Visitors Bureau).

Where to stay

Stay near JR Gifu Station for easy train and bus access, or by the Nagara River for an onsen-hotel atmosphere.
