What does the pass cover?
The official page lists (JR Central and JR West, as of October 2026):
- JR trains: non-reserved seats in ordinary cars of limited express, express, rapid and local trains between Nagoya and Toyama on the Tokaido and Takayama lines, between Tsuruga and Kyoto and the Osaka city area, and between the Osaka city area and Kansai Airport.
- Hokuriku Shinkansen: non-reserved ordinary seats between Toyama and Tsuruga. Kanazawa is on this section.
- Free reserved seats: reserved seats on JR limited express trains and the Hokuriku Shinkansen are free up to 6 times.
- Buses: the Shirakawa-go/Kanazawa and Takayama/Toyama lines between the Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa or Toyama; the Takayama–Shirakawa-go/Takaoka line to Shin-Takaoka; and the World Heritage Bus between Shirakawa-go and Shin-Takaoka Station. Some exceptions apply, and the buses need reservations.
- Not covered: the Tokaido Shinkansen between Kyoto and Shin-Osaka.
There is also a 10% discount on the Kurobe Gorge Railway from Unazuki to Kanetsuri and Keyakidaira (same source).
Is the Takayama-Hokuriku pass worth it?
It depends on how much of the route you use. These are fares on the route that we could confirm from official sources (adult, one way):
| Part of the route | Price without the pass | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Limited Express Hida, Nagoya–Takayama: reserved seat charge only | ¥2,730 (base fare extra) | JR Central, July 2025 |
| Nohi Bus Takayama–Shirakawa-go | ¥2,800 | Nohi Bus |
| Bus Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa | ¥2,800 | Nohi Bus |
| Subtotal before JR base fares and the trip on from Kanazawa | ¥8,330 |
The pass costs ¥19,800, so on the classic route the rest has to come from the JR base fare from Nagoya to Takayama and the trip from Kanazawa onward to Kyoto, Osaka or Kansai Airport. Check those two prices for your dates in a route search, add them to ¥8,330, and compare with ¥19,800.
As a rule of thumb:
- Likely worth it: the full loop Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa → Kyoto/Osaka (or Kansai Airport) within 5 days, because that uses every part of the pass.
- Likely not worth it: only Nagoya to Takayama and back, or only Takayama and Shirakawa-go. Buy separate tickets and check the advance discounts in Nagoya to Takayama.
- Check carefully: if you have a Japan Rail Pass, compare what it already covers before buying a second pass.
How do you use it on the Takayama–Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa bus?
The pass covers the Nohi Bus line between Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa, but the official page says reservations are required on the bus lines (JR Central and JR West). Nohi Bus marks reservation-only services with "R" on its timetable, and most Takayama–Shirakawa-go buses carry that mark (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026). Reserve your bus seats as soon as your dates are fixed, especially in the busy seasons. The full route, with times and luggage tips, is in our Japan Alps route guide.
Where can you buy it?
The official page lists three ways (JR Central and JR West, as of October 2026):
| Where | Notes |
|---|---|
| JR West online reservation | Bookings open up to one month before boarding, from 10:00 Japan time |
| Travel agents outside Japan | You exchange the voucher for the pass at a listed office in Japan |
| Station ticket offices in Japan | Listed on the official page |
Buying on Klook: the Klook listing sends a mailed paper exchange order, one per traveller, that you swap for the pass at an exchange office in Japan. The listing says to exchange within 90 days of purchase, and that non-Japanese passport holders need a "Temporary Visitor" stamp, so don't use the automated immigration gates when you arrive (Klook, as of October 2026). Compare the Klook price with the official ¥19,800 when you decide.
Tips for using the pass
- Reserve the Hida. The official page notes that from September 18 to 23, 2026, every seat on the Limited Express Hida was reserved-only, so a (free) reserved-seat ticket was needed. Using your free reservations on the Hida and the Shinkansen is the simplest habit.
- Plan the 5 days. The days are consecutive, so put the long travel legs inside the 5 days and the days you stay in one town outside them.
- Winter: Nohi Bus warns of delays of two hours or more on the Shirakawa-go line in winter (Nohi Bus). Leave slack before any onward train. See Takayama in winter.
