Nagoya to Kanazawa via Takayama and Shirakawa-go: The Japan Alps Route

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-19

Quick answer: The classic Japan Alps route runs Nagoya to Takayama by Limited Express Hida (about 2 hours 20 minutes), then Takayama to Shirakawa-go by Nohi Bus (about 50 minutes, ¥2,800), then Shirakawa-go to Kanazawa by bus (about 1 hour 15 minutes, ¥2,800); the Takayama–Kanazawa bus fare is ¥4,200 if you ride through. Most buses need a reserved seat, and in winter delays of two hours or more can happen, so plan 2–3 days with a night in Takayama.

Travelling light makes every bus leg easier. If you are starting in Nagoya, you can also leave bags there for a day trip with Radical Storage.

Is this route possible in winter?

Yes, but plan for delays. Nohi Bus warns that in winter, delays of two hours or more can occur, because of traffic waiting for parking at Shirakawa-go, heavy snow or expressway closures (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026). Don't book a tight onward train or flight from Kanazawa on the same day.

The Shirakawa-go light-up on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027 is the busiest time, and the 2026 event was reservation-only. See our light-up guide and best time to visit Shirakawa-go.
