Takayama is a mountain town in northern Gifu Prefecture. It has a preserved merchant district, two daily morning markets, and an Edo-period government office you can walk through. From Nagoya you can get there by train or by highway bus. This guide covers both, what to see once you arrive, and whether to go for the day or stay a night.

Getting from Nagoya to Takayama

By train: Limited Express Hida

The Limited Express Hida runs from JR Nagoya Station to JR Takayama Station. According to JR Central, the trip takes approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes (as of October 2026, JR Central).

Cost. JR Central's ticketless service lists a Nagoya–Takayama limited express charge of ¥2,730 for an adult reserved seat and ¥5,000 for the Green Car in the regular season. The charge is ¥200 lower in off-peak periods and up to ¥400 higher in the busiest periods (as of October 2026, JR Central ticketless service, Japanese). That page notes that you also need a separate basic fare ticket, and it does not list the basic fare. Check the total at the ticket office or with JR Central's own tools before you travel.

If Takayama is one stop on a longer rail trip through central Japan, a regional pass may cost less than single tickets. One option is the JR Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass. Check the pass page for the covered trains, validity and eligibility, and compare it with the price of the trips you actually plan to take.

By highway bus

Nohi Bus runs a Takayama–Nagoya express bus line. Its official page lists (as of October 2026, Nohi Bus):

The bus takes about 20 minutes longer than the train. Its one-way fare is a single fixed amount, which makes the cost easy to work out.

What to see in Takayama

The town center is walkable. The main sights below are 10 to 12 minutes on foot from JR Takayama Station. Hida Folk Village is a short bus ride away.

Sanmachi old town

The Sanmachi Traditional Buildings Preservation Area is the old merchant district. Its streets are lined with wooden townhouses that have lattice fronts, and water channels run along the edges of the lanes. It is home to several sake breweries, which hang balls of cedar leaves over their doors. You will also find small restaurants that use local ingredients, and souvenir shops. The district is a 12-minute walk from JR Takayama Station (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism).

Shops and breweries set their own hours, so check individual opening times if a particular stop matters to you.

Takayama Jinya

Takayama Jinya is the former local government office of the Edo period. Visitors can tour its offices, meeting rooms and storehouse. Details from the official site (as of October 2026, Takayama Jinya):

The official site has a notices section where closures are announced. The information page had no renovation notice when checked.

The morning markets

Takayama has two morning markets, and both are open every day of the year.

Both markets close at noon. On a day trip from Nagoya, you will only catch them if you take an early train or bus. If you stay overnight, you can see them easily the next morning.

Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato)

Hida Folk Village is an open-air museum of old farmhouses from the Hida region, including thatched gassho-style houses. Details from the official pages (as of October 2026):

Takayama Festival dates

The Takayama Festival takes place twice a year. Each festival belongs to a different shrine, and the parades use different areas of town (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism):

The 2026 autumn festival has already taken place. The next festival is the spring festival on April 14–15. Expect large crowds on festival days. If you want to stay overnight then, book your train seats and your room well in advance.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip works if you leave Nagoya early. With about 2 hours 20 minutes each way by train, or 2 hours 40 minutes by bus, you can still have a full afternoon in town. A realistic plan covers Sanmachi, Takayama Jinya, and either Hida Folk Village or a sake brewery. The morning markets close at noon, so on a day trip you will likely see them only if you arrive early.

An overnight stay adds the evening, when the old town is quieter, and the morning markets the next day. It also lets you continue to another destination, such as Shirakawa-go or Gero, instead of going back to Nagoya.

A simple overnight plan:

Combining Takayama with Shirakawa-go or Gero

Shirakawa-go. The gassho-style village of Shirakawa-go is often paired with Takayama. See our guide to Shirakawa-go from Nagoya for routes. If you would rather not plan the connections yourself, one option is the Takayama & Shirakawa-go day tour from Nagoya. Check the tour page for the itinerary, time in each place, and what is included.

Gero Onsen. Gero is a hot spring town. JR Central's suggested itinerary lists the train from Takayama to Gero at about 45–60 minutes (as of October 2026, JR Central). That makes Gero a natural overnight stop on the way back to Nagoya. See our Gero Onsen guide.
