A night in a ryokan with its own hot spring bath is one of the highlights of a trip to the Hida region. The three usual choices are Takayama, Gero Onsen and the Okuhida hot spring villages, and they suit quite different trips. This guide compares them using the local tourism sites, JR Central and Nohi Bus.

Why stay in Gero Onsen?
Gero is a single, compact hot spring town. The Gifu Prefecture tourism site says about 50 ryokan and hotels line the Hida River and counts nine foot baths around town (Gifu Prefecture tourism, as of October 2026). The tourism association describes the water as an alkaline simple spring with a pH of 9.2 (Gero Onsen Tourism Association).
It is the easiest to reach: the Limited Express Hida runs direct from Nagoya, about 1 hour 30–40 minutes (Visit Gifu), and it is about 45–60 minutes by train from Takayama (JR Central). Even before check-in you can use public baths such as Shirasagi-no-yu (¥470 for adults), about 7 minutes from the station (Gero Onsen Tourism Association).
Choose Gero if you are travelling between Nagoya and Takayama by train and want to break the journey, or want a hot spring town you can explore on foot. More in our Gero Onsen guide and Nagoya to Gero Onsen.
Why stay in Okuhida?
Hida Takayama Tourism describes Okuhida Onsen-go as five hot spring areas (Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026):
| Area | How the tourism site describes it |
|---|---|
| Hirayu Onsen | The oldest hot spa resort in Okuhida |
| Fukuji Onsen | The most secluded hot spring location |
| Shin-Hirayu Onsen | In the middle of the village, with small and large places to stay |
| Tochio Onsen | An idyllic, tranquil hot spring |
| Shinhotaka Onsen | At the start of the Northern Alps trail, several places to stay with great views |
The same page says Okuhida has the largest number of open-air baths in Japan, and the Okuhida tourism association counts over 100 hot springs with a flow of about 37,000 litres per minute, at about 800 to 1,300 m (Okuhida tourism association).
Getting there takes longer: about 58 minutes by Nohi Bus from Takayama to Hirayu (¥1,600) and about 1 hour 35–45 minutes to the Shinhotaka Ropeway (¥2,200) (Nohi Bus).
Choose Okuhida if you want mountain views from the bath, and especially if you are riding the Shinhotaka Ropeway or going to Kamikochi the next day.
Why stay in Takayama?
Takayama is about the location, not the bath. The Nohi Bus Center next to JR Takayama Station has buses to Shirakawa-go, Okuhida and Kamikochi, and you can walk to the morning markets and Sanmachi old town. Hida Takayama Tourism lists ryokan, hotels, minshuku (family-run inns) and pensions in the city (Hida Takayama Tourism).
Choose Takayama if this is your first visit and you want the most sights and connections. Our where to stay in Takayama guide compares the station area and the old town.
What is Takayama's accommodation tax?
Since October 1, 2025, Takayama City charges an accommodation tax per person per night: ¥100 when the room charge is under ¥10,000, ¥200 from ¥10,000 to under ¥30,000, and ¥300 from ¥30,000. The room charge excludes meals and consumption tax. Children are exempt up to the first March 31 after their 12th birthday (Takayama City; Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026). The tax applies to lodging in the city, and Okuhida Onsen-go is part of Takayama City. How you pay varies: some inns add it to an advance payment, others collect it on site.
Can you combine them?
Yes, and on a longer trip that is often the best answer: Gero on the way up from Nagoya, a night in Takayama for the sights, then a night in Okuhida. See Gero Onsen vs Okuhida Onsen for a closer comparison of the two hot spring areas and How many days in Takayama? for how to split your time.
