Takayama or Shirakawa-go? Which to Visit, and How to Do Both

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-19

Quick answer: Choose Takayama if you want a walkable old town with morning markets, sake breweries and museums that rewards a night's stay; choose Shirakawa-go if you mainly want to see the thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouse village, which takes about 2–3 hours on foot. They are about 50 minutes apart by express bus, so many travelers do both, either on a guided day tour from Nagoya or by staying a night in Takayama.

What is the difference between Takayama and Shirakawa-go?

Takayama is a town. Its Sanmachi old merchant district has wooden townhouses with lattice fronts, sake breweries with cedar balls over their doors, small restaurants and souvenir shops, and it is a 12-minute walk from JR Takayama Station (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism). You can also tour Takayama Jinya, the former Edo-period government office (¥500 for individuals, Takayama Jinya), and the Hida Folk Village open-air museum of old farmhouses (¥700 for adults, Hida Folk Village). For a deeper look, see our Takayama guide.

Shirakawa-go is a village. Its draw is the gassho-zukuri farmhouses, many of which are still homes (Visit Gifu). The main sights are the Shiroyama viewpoint over the whole settlement, Wada House, which Visit Gifu calls the oldest and largest remaining gassho-zukuri house in the village, and the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen open-air museum. See our Shirakawa-go guide for opening hours and fees.

In short, Takayama has more to do and suits a longer stay. Shirakawa-go is a single, very striking sight that most people see in a few hours.

How long do you need in each?

Shirakawa-go: The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association estimates that walking around the village takes about 2–3 hours (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ, as of October 2026). If you want the view from the Shiroyama viewpoint by shuttle, note that it runs only from 10:00 to 14:40, with a break from 12:00 to 13:00 (same source).

Takayama: A day trip from Nagoya can cover Sanmachi, Takayama Jinya, and either Hida Folk Village or a sake brewery. The Miyagawa and Jinya-mae morning markets both close at noon (as of October 2026, Hida Takayama Tourism), so staying a night is the easy way to see them.

Which is easier to reach from Nagoya?

Both take a little over two hours each way.

Takayama has the extra option of the train, which suits travelers using a rail pass.

Can you do both Takayama and Shirakawa-go?

Yes. The express bus between Takayama and Shirakawago Bus Terminal takes about 50 minutes (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). There are two common ways to combine them.

1. A guided day tour from Nagoya

Tours that visit both in one day handle all the transport and reservations. The trade-off is time: on multi-stop tours, each stop can be short. Compare the time in each place, the meeting point and the return time before booking. One option is the Takayama and Shirakawa-go day tour from Nagoya on Klook.

2. Two days with a night in Takayama

This is the most relaxed option and gives you the morning markets. See where to stay in Takayama for areas to book.

Which is better in winter?

Shirakawa-go in snow is the image many people have in mind. On four evenings in 2027 (January 11, 17, 24 and 31), the village holds its winter light-up, and the 2026 event was reservation-only (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association; Gifu Prefecture tourism site, as of October 2026). Read our light-up guide before you plan. For cherry blossom and autumn leaf dates, see the best time to visit Shirakawa-go.

Highway buses can be delayed by road and weather conditions, and Gifu Bus does not refund fares or cover missed connections caused by delays (Gifu Bus). In winter, leave a buffer before any onward train or flight. Our Gifu winter guide has more.

So which should you choose?

Choose Takayama if you have one day and want food, sake, old streets and museums, or if you can stay a night.

Choose Shirakawa-go if the thatched farmhouse village is the one thing you want to see, and you are happy with a few hours there.

Do both if you have two days, or book a combined tour if you only have one.

FAQ

Is Takayama or Shirakawa-go better for a day trip from Nagoya?

Both work as day trips. Takayama has more to fill a day, with the old town, Takayama Jinya and Hida Folk Village. Shirakawa-go takes about 2–3 hours to walk around, according to the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, so a day trip there leaves plenty of time on the bus. A combined tour visits both in one day.

How far is Shirakawa-go from Takayama?

The express bus from Takayama to Shirakawago Bus Terminal takes about 50 minutes (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026).

Can I see Takayama and Shirakawa-go in one day?

Yes, most easily on a guided day tour from Nagoya that includes both. Expect less time in each place than if you visited them separately.

Do I need to book buses to Takayama and Shirakawa-go?

Yes for the highway buses from Nagoya. Nohi Bus requires a reservation on every Nagoya–Takayama bus, and the Nagoya–Shirakawa-go bus has reserved seats that open for booking one month before the travel date (Nohi Bus; Gifu Bus, as of October 2026).
