Takayama in Winter: What's Open, Illuminations and Getting There in Snow

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-20

Quick answer: Takayama is fully open in winter, with shorter hours at some sights (the morning markets open at 8:00 from December to March, and Takayama Jinya closes at 16:30 from November to March). Evening illuminations along the Miyagawa River and at Hida Folk Village, plus ice events in nearby Okuhida, are the winter highlights, and Shirakawa-go's light-up is on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027. Travel by train or bus rather than driving, and allow extra time: buses can be delayed by snow, and taxis can have waits of over an hour on snowy days.
