Shirakawa-go, the gassho-zukuri farmhouse village in the mountains of northern Gifu, is a realistic day trip from Nagoya. You have two practical choices: book a seat on the direct highway bus and explore on your own, or join a guided day tour that handles the transport for you. This guide covers both, with the official details you need to plan.
Getting there by highway bus from Nagoya
The direct route: Meitetsu Bus Center to Shirakawa-go
The simplest public-transport option is the Nagoya–Shirakawa-go highway bus (名古屋白川郷線). It leaves from the Meitetsu Bus Center, about a 5-minute walk from Nagoya Station. The bus takes about 2 hours 30 minutes to Shirakawago Bus Terminal, and the village is a 1-minute walk from there. The trip from Nagoya Station takes about 2 hours 50 minutes in total (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026).
The route is run jointly by Gifu Bus, Meitetsu Bus and Hokuriku Railroad. Between Nagoya and Shirakawa-go, it also stops at Kosoku Kakamigahara, Kosoku Seki, Gujo-Hachiman IC and Kosoku Hirugano-kogen (Gifu Bus, as of October 2026).
Reservations are required
You need a reservation for this bus. Seats are reserved, and if the bus is full you cannot board without one. Bookings open one month before the travel date (Gifu Bus, as of October 2026). You can book:
- Online through Highway Bus.com. Online bookings have a payment deadline, and unpaid bookings are cancelled automatically.
- By phone, then pick up your ticket at a counter such as the Meitetsu Bus Center.
Book your return seat when you book the outbound trip. On a day trip, your return bus is what sets your time in the village.
Fare
The adult one-way fare from the Meitetsu Bus Center to Shirakawa-go depends on the travel date. It ranges from 3,600 yen to 4,700 yen across five date categories (S, A, B, C, D), and each date's category is shown on a fare calendar. Child fares are half the adult fare (Gifu Bus, as of October 2026). Check the calendar for your date before you budget.
Gifu Bus does not post the full timetable on the route page itself; it is a PDF linked from that page. Download the current version when you plan, because schedules change.
Alternative: train to Takayama, then bus
You can also take the JR Limited Express Hida from Nagoya to Takayama (about 2 hours 20 minutes), then an express bus to Shirakawago Bus Terminal (about 50 minutes). The total is about 3 hours 25 minutes from Nagoya Station (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). This route takes longer, but it suits travelers who want to see Takayama as well or are using a rail pass. The Tourist Association links to Nohi Bus for the Takayama–Shirakawa-go leg.
Weather and delays
Gifu Bus notes that highway buses can be delayed by road and weather conditions. It does not refund fares or cover missed connections caused by delays (Gifu Bus, as of October 2026). In winter, leave plenty of time before any onward train or flight.
The alternative: guided day tours from Nagoya
Several companies run guided day tours to Shirakawa-go from Nagoya. Itineraries vary. Some go only to Shirakawa-go, and others add Takayama or Gujo-Hachiman on the same day. Tours generally include round-trip transport and set the timetable for you, so there is no bus seat to reserve and no connection to plan.
Points to compare before booking:
- Time in Shirakawa-go itself. On tours that combine several stops, the village visit can be short.
- Meeting point and return time in Nagoya.
- What's included. Some tours include admission or meals, and some don't.
- Guide language and whether the guide walks the village with you.
- Cancellation policy, which matters in snowy months.
On Klook, examples include a Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Gujo Hachiman day tour from Nagoya and a Takayama and Shirakawa-go day tour from Nagoya. Check the itinerary, guide language and return time on each page before you book.
What to see in Shirakawa-go
The Tourist Association estimates that walking around the village takes about 2–3 hours (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ, as of October 2026). Fit the following around your bus or tour times.
Shiroyama viewpoint (observation deck)
Visit Gifu describes the Shiroyama Viewpoint as offering a panoramic view of the whole settlement (Visit Gifu, as of October 2026). This is the classic view of the village from above. You can walk up, or take the shuttle bus that leaves from in front of Wada House:
- Fare: 200 yen one way, cash only, paid on the bus
- Hours: daily from 10:00 to 14:40, every 20 minutes, with a break from 12:00 to 13:00
(Source: Shirakawa-go Tourist Association FAQ, as of October 2026.)
The shuttle's last run is in the early afternoon. If the view matters to you, go up early in your visit.
Wada House
Visit Gifu calls Wada House the oldest and largest remaining gassho-zukuri house in the village. Part of it is open to visitors while it is still used as a private residence (Visit Gifu). The first and second floors are open, and a QR-code audio corner has curator explanations.
- Admission: adults (junior high school age and up) 400 yen, elementary school children 200 yen, cash only
- Hours: 9:00–17:00, closed irregularly

Winter light-up (2027)
The Shirakawa-go Light-Up, when the farmhouses are lit on selected winter evenings, takes place on four days in 2027: January 11 (Monday, national holiday), January 17, January 24 and January 31 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). The Tourist Association also posts an English overview of the 41st (2027) event, with the details of how to attend.
Plan well ahead:
- The 2026 event was run on a fully advance-reservation basis, and visitors who arrived without a booking could not take part (Gifu Prefecture tourism site, as of October 2026). Expect similar rules for 2027, and confirm on the official overview page.
- For 2027, the first round of standard car parking reservations (from September 10) is already sold out. Lodging handled by the Tourist Association is allocated by lottery, not first-come, first-served (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026).
- On light-up days, every vehicle needs a parking reservation (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association).
Because of these rules, many visitors from Nagoya go to the light-up on an organized tour that includes the required reservations. If you go by regular highway bus instead, confirm with the official overview that you can attend the evening event and still get back.
Practical tips
- Carry cash. Wada House admission and the viewpoint shuttle are cash only.
- Lock in your return bus first. Reserved seats mean you can't count on catching an earlier or later bus.
- Watch the shuttle's hours. The viewpoint shuttle stops at 14:40 and pauses at midday.
- Pack light. Gifu Bus says luggage space is limited and asks passengers to keep bags to a minimum.
- Driving instead? The village's designated lot (Seseragi Park) charges 2,000 yen for a standard car and is open 8:00–17:00, with last entry at 16:30 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026).
- Respect the residents. Many of the houses are still homes (Visit Gifu). Keep to public paths and don't enter private property.
