On a few winter evenings each year, the thatched gassho-zukuri farmhouses of Shirakawa-go's Ogimachi village are lit up against the snow. You can't just turn up: the event is reservation-only, and most of the ways in sell out weeks or months ahead. This guide covers the confirmed 2027 dates, each way to secure a place, and how to get there from Nagoya or Takayama.

Shirakawa-go light-up 2027 dates and times

The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association has confirmed the 41st Shirakawa-go Light-Up Event for these dates (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026):

Date Day
January 11, 2027 Monday (national holiday)
January 17, 2027 Sunday
January 24, 2027 Sunday
January 31, 2027 Sunday

The lights are on from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm (Nohi Bus light-up tour page, as of October 2026). The same four dates appear in Nohi Bus's 2027 schedule notice.

The association published the schedule on July 1, 2026, and an event overview on September 2, 2026 (announcements list). The final 2027 rules are on the full 2027 overview page, so read it before you book.

The key rule: reservation-only, no walk-ins

For the 2026 (40th) event, the organisers said the light-up was "strictly reservation-based (entry ticket required)." Arriving the same day without a reservation was not allowed, whether by route bus, private car, rental car, taxi or chartered bus (2026 notice, published July 1, 2025). The village also described the 2026 event as run on a "complete advance reservation system" with tickets (Shirakawa village, last updated July 3, 2025).

Expect the same approach in 2027, but check the 2027 overview to confirm the exact wording.

Four ways to get a spot in 2027

1. Nohi Bus light-up tour from Takayama (best for most visitors)

Nohi Bus runs official light-up bus tours from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center on all four dates. There are three courses. All prices and times below come from the Nohi Bus English page, as of October 2026:

Course Fare (adult or child 6–12) Departs Takayama Back in Takayama Includes
A: Gassho-zukuri Minkaen 13,000 yen 3:40 pm 8:20 pm Round-trip bus, open-air museum entry with zenzai (sweet red-bean soup)
B: Observation deck 16,000 yen 3:10 pm 8:45 pm Round-trip bus, Ogimachi Castle observation deck ticket, souvenir
C: Hirase Onsen 14,000 yen 2:40 pm 8:20 pm Round-trip bus, Shiramizu-no-yu bath ticket with towel, souvenir

Sales dates. Sales open in stages at 2:00 pm (Japan time) (Nohi Bus Japanese page, as of October 2026):

2. Stay overnight in the village (lottery)

Inns booked through the Tourist Association are allocated by lottery, not first come, first served. Applications opened on October 1, 2026 (Tourist Association, as of October 2026). Check the 2027 deadlines on the association's lottery page.

Here is how it worked for the 2026 event (Tourist Association, published November 26, 2025):

3. Drive and reserve parking

Regular-car parking for 2027 is sold online only, through the Tourist Association website, and paid by credit card. The first round (from September 10, 2026) is sold out. The second round goes on sale on December 1, 2026, at 1:00 pm (Tourist Association notice, September 10, 2026). The notice gives no price.

Winter roads to Shirakawa-go can be snowy and icy. If you aren't used to driving in snow, a bus tour is the simpler choice.

4. Tours from other travel companies

Some travel companies sell light-up packages. Before you buy one, check that it includes the light-up entry and, if you want it, an observation deck ticket.

The observation deck: book it in advance

The well-known overhead view comes from the Ogimachi Castle Ruins observation deck. According to Nohi Bus (as of October 2026, source):

For the 2026 event, inn stays also came with a deck ticket (Tourist Association, November 26, 2025).

How to get there from Takayama

Takayama is the departure point for the official light-up tours, so it is the easiest base. Outside light-up evenings, Nohi Bus route buses take about 50 minutes from Takayama to Shirakawa-go and cost 2,800 yen one way (as of October 2026, Nohi Bus). Some buses are reservation-only. Nohi Bus warns that delays of two hours or more can happen. On light-up dates, book the tour rather than relying on route buses, because the tour includes your return.

How to get there from Nagoya

There's no official Nohi light-up tour leaving from Nagoya, since its tours start only in Takayama. You have two practical options:

Option A: Train to Takayama, then the Nohi tour. The Limited Express Hida takes about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya Station to Takayama (JR Central, as of October 2026). Arrive with time to collect your ticket before the tour leaves between 2:40 pm and 3:40 pm. Tours return to Takayama between 8:20 pm and 8:45 pm, so plan to stay the night in Takayama. Our Takayama from Nagoya guide covers the train in more detail.

Option B: Highway bus to Shirakawa-go. Meitetsu and Gifu Bus run reserved-seat buses from the Meitetsu Bus Center. The trip takes about 2 hours 42 minutes, and adult fares run from 3,600 to 4,700 yen depending on the date (Gifu Bus, as of October 2026). Bookings open one month before departure. In 2026, arriving by route bus without a light-up reservation wasn't allowed, so only use this option if you already have a reservation, such as an inn stay. See Shirakawa-go from Nagoya for daytime trips.

Visiting by day instead? If you can't get a light-up spot, a daytime tour still shows the village in snow. This Takayama and Shirakawa-go day trip from Nagoya is a general day tour, not a light-up tour. Another option adds Gujo Hachiman: the Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Gujo Hachiman day tour. Check each listing for its winter schedule. For more ideas, see our Nagoya day trips.
