Gujo Hachiman is a small castle town in the mountains of central Gifu, built along clear rivers and narrow canals. It's best known for its summer dance festival, but autumn is quieter and just as beautiful.
Getting there from Nagoya
The easiest way is the highway bus from the JR Nagoya Station (Shinkansen side) bus stop to the Gujo Hachiman IC stop: about 1 hour 20 minutes, six buses each way per day, ¥2,600 one way (¥2,300 if you book online). Buses from the Meitetsu Bus Center also run, with fewer departures (Gifu tourism, fares as of April 2026).
The Gujo Hachiman IC stop is on the expressway, not in town. A shared taxi takes you to the center for ¥350 per person, but it runs by reservation only, so book it before you set off (Gujo Hachiman Tourism Association).
Gujo Hachiman Castle
The castle sits on a hill above town. It began as a fort built in 1559, and the current wooden keep was rebuilt in 1933, modeled on Ogaki Castle.

- Momiji (maple) Festival: starts November 1
- Peak autumn color: forecast around November 7 to 23, at the castle and at Jion-ji Temple's garden

Walk the old town
The Shokunin-machi district is a 14-hectare area of matching wooden townhouses and waterways. The Nagaragawa Railway's Gujo Hachiman Station, opened in 1929, has been restored to its original look (source).
Coming back in summer: Gujo Odori
Gujo Odori is a dance festival held on about 30 nights each summer, where anyone can join in. In 2026 it ran from July 11 to September 5, with all-night dancing from August 13 to 16 (Gifu tourism). Check the official schedule for 2027 dates.
Where to stay
Gujo Hachiman has traditional inns with dinner and breakfast, as well as room-only stays. Staying overnight lets you see the town early in the morning, before day-trippers arrive.
