Travellers heading to Takayama and Shirakawa-go often ask whether to buy the nationwide Japan Rail Pass or a regional pass. The answer depends on where else you are going in the same week. This guide compares the two using the official Japan Rail Pass site and the official Takayama-Hokuriku pass page run by JR Central and JR West.

What does each pass cost?
Japan Rail Pass (adult, Ordinary class, bought online): ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 days and ¥100,000 for 21 days. The Green Car version costs ¥70,000 for 7 days. Buying through an overseas agency costs more, for example ¥53,000 for the 7-day Ordinary pass (Japan Rail Pass, as of October 2026).
Takayama-Hokuriku Area Tourist Pass: ¥19,800 for adults and ¥9,900 for children, valid for 5 consecutive days (JR Central and JR West, as of October 2026).
The regional pass costs ¥30,200 less than a 7-day Japan Rail Pass bought online.
Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the bus to Shirakawa-go?
Not according to its official scope page. That page lists JR Bus local lines (with some exclusions) and says the pass is not valid on JR Bus express routes; it does not list Nohi Bus or other private bus companies (Japan Rail Pass, as of October 2026). Shirakawa-go has no railway, so with a Japan Rail Pass you pay for the bus separately: Nohi Bus lists Takayama–Shirakawa-go and Shirakawa-go–Kanazawa at ¥2,800 each for adults (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026).
The Takayama-Hokuriku pass includes the bus lines between the Takayama Nohi Bus Center, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa or Toyama, and between Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Shin-Takaoka, with reservations required and some exceptions (JR Central and JR West).
What about the Limited Express Hida?
The Takayama-Hokuriku pass page names the Hida and the Nagoya–Takayama–Toyama route directly. The Japan Rail Pass scope page says JR limited express trains are covered "with some exceptions" but does not list the Hida by name (Japan Rail Pass). The Hida is a JR Central limited express, so it falls in the covered category; check the exceptions on the official page before you rely on it.
Note that the Japan Rail Pass is not valid on Nozomi or Mizuho Shinkansen trains, so between Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto you would ride Hikari or Kodama instead, or buy the separate Nozomi ticket for pass holders (same source).
Which pass should you buy?
| Your plan within one week | Better choice |
|---|---|
| Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → Kanazawa → Kyoto/Osaka | Takayama-Hokuriku pass |
| The loop above, plus Kansai Airport | Takayama-Hokuriku pass (it covers Osaka–Kansai Airport) |
| Tokyo → Kyoto/Osaka and the Takayama loop in the same 7 days | Compare: add the Tokyo legs' price to ¥19,800, then compare with ¥50,000 |
| Nagoya ↔ Takayama only | Probably neither; compare single tickets in Nagoya to Takayama |
This table is our reading of the coverage and prices above, not an official recommendation.
The regional pass gives you 5 days, and the Japan Rail Pass's shortest option is 7. If your week also has a Tokyo leg, price that leg as a single ticket and add it to the regional pass before deciding. Our Takayama-Hokuriku pass guide has the full coverage, and the Japan Alps route guide has every leg with times and fares.
Tips for either pass
- Reserve the Shirakawa-go bus early. Most Takayama–Shirakawa-go services are reservation-only, marked "R" on the Nohi Bus timetable (Nohi Bus).
- Use the free seat reservations. Both passes let you reserve seats at no extra cost (with the regional pass limited to 6).
- Check the arrival stamp. The Japan Rail Pass is for foreign visitors with Temporary Visitor status (Japan Rail Pass), and Klook's listing for the regional pass also asks for a Temporary Visitor stamp, so avoid the automated immigration gates that skip the stamp (Klook).
FAQ
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it for Takayama and Shirakawa-go?
Usually not on its own. A 7-day Ordinary Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000 online and does not list the Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go, while the Takayama-Hokuriku pass costs ¥19,800 for 5 days and includes that bus (Japan Rail Pass; JR Central and JR West, as of October 2026).
Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go?
The official scope page lists only JR Bus local lines and does not mention Nohi Bus, so plan to pay ¥2,800 per leg between Takayama, Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa (Nohi Bus).
How much is the Japan Rail Pass?
The 7-day Ordinary pass is ¥50,000 for adults bought online, or ¥53,000 through an overseas agency. The 14-day pass is ¥80,000 and the 21-day pass ¥100,000 online (Japan Rail Pass, as of October 2026).
Can I use both passes on one trip?
Yes, on different days, as long as you qualify for each. For example, a Japan Rail Pass for a Tokyo-to-Kansai week and the regional pass for a separate 5 days in the Alps. Check that the days don't overlap so you are not paying twice.
