What will you see from the Shinhotaka Ropeway?

The operator says the rooftop observation deck at Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station (2,156 m) has a 360-degree view of the Northern Alps, including Mount Nishihotaka, Mount Yari and Mount Kasagatake, and that it has two stars in the Michelin Green Guide Japan. If it is cold or windy, the Panorama Lounge on the 4th floor has views from indoors (Shinhotaka Ropeway, as of October 2026).

The second ropeway uses what the operator calls Japan's only two-storey gondola (Shinhotaka Ropeway).

Food: Café Gokan at the top station, a coffee shop with light meals such as ramen at Shinhotaka Onsen Station, and Alps Bakery, known for croissants, at Shirakabadaira Station (same facility page).

How do you get to the Shinhotaka Ropeway from Takayama?

Take the Nohi Bus Shinhotaka Line from Takayama Bus Terminal, next to JR Takayama Station, to the Shinhotaka Ropeway stop (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026):

From Time (from timetable) Adult fare one way
Takayama Bus Terminal About 1 h 35–45 min ¥2,200
Hirayu Onsen — ¥910

Buses run roughly hourly, with some seasonal departures. Buy tickets at the ticket window or machine in Takayama or Hirayu; if those are closed, you pay on board. Nohi Bus warns that buses can be badly delayed by snow or traffic in Takayama (same source).

Driving: the Shinhotaka Onsen car park (about 160 spaces) charges ¥800 per 6 hours for cars and is a 2–5 minute walk from the first station. The larger Nabedaira Kogen car park is closed from early November to late April (Shinhotaka Ropeway access, as of October 2026). The operator says winter driving requires winter equipment such as snow tyres (Shinhotaka Ropeway FAQ).

Can you ride the Shinhotaka Ropeway in winter?

Yes. The ropeway is open year-round, but strong winds can stop it at any time, and it closes for inspection once or twice a year. Snow usually falls from mid-November to early April (Shinhotaka Ropeway FAQ, as of October 2026).

It is very cold at the top in winter. The operator's monthly averages list January at −7°C (high) to −10°C (low), and August, the warmest month, at 19°C to 17°C (same FAQ). Bring warm layers, gloves and shoes with grip even on a sunny day. Check the operating status on the official site before you set off.

For more on winter in the area, see Takayama in winter and our Gifu winter guide.

Is the Shinhotaka Ropeway worth it?

It is worth it if you want mountain scenery without hiking and the weather is clear: the whole point is the view from 2,156 m. With the bus at about 1 hour 35–45 minutes each way from Takayama, it takes most of a day, so it fits best with a night in Okuhida's hot spring villages. Compare the area with Gero in Gero Onsen vs Okuhida Onsen.

Skip it on a cloudy or stormy day, when the view may be hidden and the ropeway may stop for wind.

Accessibility: the operator says wheelchair users can reach Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station with elevators and ramps, with stair lifts in some areas, and loaner wheelchairs are available at Shinhotaka Onsen and Shirakabadaira stations (Shinhotaka Ropeway FAQ).
