Hida Furukawa or Takayama? A Quiet Day Trip Compared

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-25

Quick answer: You don't have to choose: Hida Furukawa is about 15 minutes by train from Takayama, so the usual plan is to stay in Takayama for its bigger old town, markets and bus connections, and spend a half day in Furukawa for the quieter Seto River canal lined with white-walled storehouses (carp swim there from April to November) and the Festival Hall (¥500, about 5 minutes on foot from Hida-Furukawa Station). Go on April 19–20 for the Furukawa Festival, whose Okoshi Daiko drum procession is UNESCO-listed.

What is there to see in Hida Furukawa?

When is the Furukawa Festival?

Every year on April 19 and 20. On the night of April 19, the Okoshi Daiko procession carries a large drum through town late into the night, and on the night of April 20 lantern-lit floats tour the streets. The float parade is cancelled in rain, but the Okoshi Daiko goes ahead. The Okoshi Daiko and float events are registered as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (Hida City tourism, as of October 2026).

The Spring Takayama Festival is on April 14–15 (Hida Takayama Tourism), so a mid-April trip can take in both; book a Takayama hotel early for those dates.

How do you get from Takayama to Hida Furukawa?

By JR train on the Takayama Line, about 15 minutes (Hida City tourism). Check the return train times at Takayama Station or on JR Central's train information pages before you go. From October 1, 2025, TOICA IC cards can be used at Takayama and Hida-Furukawa stations for the base fare (JR Central).

From Nagoya, Hida City gives about 2 hours 40 minutes by train or 2 hours 45 minutes by bus; from Toyama, about 1 hour 15 minutes by train (same source).

Which should you choose?

Stay in Takayama in almost every case: it has more places to stay, the morning markets and the Nohi Bus Center for Shirakawa-go, Okuhida and Kamikochi. See where to stay in Takayama.

Add Hida Furukawa as a half day if you have a second or third day in Takayama, want a quieter old town, or are visiting from April to November when the carp are in the canal. A morning in Furukawa and an afternoon in Takayama fits easily. For how to split a longer stay, see How many days in Takayama? and the Gifu 3-day itinerary.
