What time do the Takayama morning markets open?
From 7:00 to 12:00 from April to November, and 8:00 to 12:00 from December to March. Hida Takayama Tourism lists both markets as open all year round and suggests arriving around 6:00 to watch the vendors set up (Hida Takayama Tourism, as of October 2026). It also notes the number of stalls can drop to about 10 in rain or in winter, so go on a dry morning if you can.
Miyagawa or Jinya-mae: which market should you visit?
Miyagawa is the bigger one, with about 60 stalls on a 350 m stretch of the river. One side sells vegetables, fruit, pickles and spices; the other sells Japanese sweets and crafts, including chopsticks, sarubobo dolls and Ichii Itto-bori wood carvings (same source).
Jinya-mae is run by local growers: only farmers may open stalls, and it is known for unusual ingredients such as potato stems, carrot leaves and wild vegetables. Hida Takayama Tourism says it began over 300 years ago, when silk-raising farmers sold mulberry leaves (same source).
They are close enough to see both in one morning: start at Jinya-mae, then walk to the river. Takayama Jinya itself opens at 8:45 (¥500 for adults) if you want to look inside afterwards (Takayama Jinya, as of October 2026).
Can you see the morning market on a day trip from Nagoya?
Not easily. The Limited Express Hida takes about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya (JR Central), and the markets close at noon. The simple answer is to stay one night: arrive in the afternoon, see Sanmachi and Takayama Jinya, and do the markets the next morning before a bus to Shirakawa-go. Our Takayama 2-day itinerary and How many days in Takayama? are built around this.
Where to stay: both markets are within walking distance of the station area, and the station is where buses leave for Shirakawa-go and Okuhida. See where to stay in Takayama. Since October 1, 2025, Takayama adds an accommodation tax of ¥100–¥300 per person per night (Takayama City).
What should you buy or eat?
The official listing highlights pickles, seasonal vegetables and fruit, spices and Japanese sweets, plus crafts such as sarubobo dolls and Ichii Itto-bori carvings (Hida Takayama Tourism). For a sit-down meal later in the day, see our Hida beef guide.
Visiting in winter
The markets open an hour later, at 8:00, from December to March, and fewer stalls set up in snow or cold (same source). Combine an early market with a warm indoor sight, and see Takayama in winter for snow and travel tips.
Before you go: you'll rely on your phone for bus times and maps on this trip. Our Japan eSIM guide explains how much data to get; Yesim's Japan plans start at $4.44 for 1 GB, valid 30 days from first connection (as of October 2026).
