Staying Overnight in Shirakawa-go: Gassho Farmhouse Inns, Ryokan and How to Book

Facts checked against official sources: 2026-10-28

Quick answer: Staying overnight is the only way to be in Shirakawa-go after dark outside the light-up evenings, because day visitors are not admitted to the village at night; the Tourist Association lists 41 places to stay, from thatched gassho-house inns in Ogimachi to ryokan with hot springs in Hirase, bookable through its "Book a room in Shirakawa" search or by phone (+81-5769-6-1013, 9:00–17:00). Book early, and for the January light-up nights the Association's inn rooms are allocated by lottery.

Is it worth staying overnight in Shirakawa-go?

Yes, if seeing the village at night or without the midday crowds matters to you. The Tourist Association says day visitors are not admitted to Ogimachi after dark, to protect residents' lives and privacy, so outside the light-up evenings only overnight guests can be in the village at night (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association). A stay also removes the pressure of the last bus to Takayama, which leaves at 17:30 (Nohi Bus, as of October 2026).

It is less worth it if you just want a look at the thatched houses: a day trip from Takayama (about 50 minutes by bus) or Kanazawa covers the main sights. See Is Shirakawa-go worth visiting?.

Ogimachi is the main village with the thatched houses. Hirase and the other areas are outside Ogimachi, so check how you will get between your inn and the bus terminal before booking.

Can you stay overnight for the light-up?

Yes, but the Tourist Association allocates the inn rooms it handles for the light-up nights by lottery, not first come, first served. The 41st light-up is on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027 (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association, as of October 2026). For the 2026 event, the lottery closed on October 31 and rooms declined by winners were then released first come, first served (Tourist Association). See our Shirakawa-go light-up guide for tours and the observation deck.

What if the village is full?

Stay in Takayama, about 50 minutes away by express bus, which has far more hotels near the bus center (Shirakawa-go Tourist Association). See where to stay in Takayama and Takayama to Shirakawa-go. In winter, also read Shirakawa-go in winter for snow and bus delays.
